Kea is a display face made from wire. Traditionally, script typefaces are designed around the calligraphic hand, connecting letters, dramatic flourishes, and fancy ligatures. Kea challenges this prescriptive definition. What if we worked with a different calligraphic tool? What if a typeface had no overlaps, no intersections, and a complete disregard for rules, while still maintaining the spirit of handwriting?
Ho.mag is Kea’s type specimen. I had the lovely opportunity to interview Daytona Mess (aka Ando), a contemporary French type designer and lover of experimental display type. The magazine retells our conversation on pushing boundaries, illegibility, and world-building.
Drawing inspiration from avant-garde, high fashion magazines, I paired experimental type jewelry with experimental layouts and typesetting. The bodycopy of the magazine is set in Elliot, my original typeface.
